Yellowjackets are social wasps that can defend nests with repeated stings. Activity near a ground opening or building cavity should be approached cautiously.
Identification and habits
Many have strong yellow-and-black markings. Nests may be below ground or in sheltered cavities, so the visible entry can be only a small part of the colony’s location.
What to do at your property
Keep away from suspected nest entrances, especially during mowing or maintenance. Do not plug an occupied opening or disturb the nest. Report its location from a safe distance and ask about service access. Keep food and drink containers covered outdoors.
