Carpenter Bee Identification and Property Tips

Carpenter bees excavate nesting tunnels in wood. Repeated activity around decks, trim or other wood deserves assessment rather than an automatic assumption of serious damage.
Identification and habits
They resemble bumblebees but usually have a shiny upper abdomen. Round entrance holes and repeated visits can suggest nesting. Males cannot sting; females can, so avoid handling them.
What to do at your property
Photograph holes and note whether activity is new or recurring. Ask about identification, the condition of the wood and treatment or repair sequencing. Do not assume that plugging an active hole by itself completes the work.
