Pack Rat Identification and Property Tips

Pack rats are native woodrats, a different group from Norway rats and roof rats. A rodent seen near a rocky or wooded Missouri property needs identification before a control plan is chosen.

Identification and habits

Woodrats collect sticks and other material around their shelters, which explains the name pack rat. A pile of gathered material is a useful observation, but it does not identify the animal by itself. Record sightings, nesting locations and any damage without disturbing the shelter.

What to do at your property

Keep stored food and animal feed in sound containers, reduce clutter around outbuildings and photograph possible entry gaps. Ask for an assessment if activity reaches occupied buildings. Avoid handling wild rodents or dry sweeping their droppings; use CDC guidance for rodent cleanup.
