Black Vine Weevil Identification and Property Tips

Black vine weevils are plant-feeding beetles. An occasional adult indoors calls for identification and an entry check; damage to landscape plants calls for a closer look at the plant and its roots.

Identification and habits

Adults feed on foliage and can leave notches along leaf edges. The immature stage feeds below ground. Leaf notches alone are not a conclusive diagnosis, and an indoor beetle should not automatically be treated as a stored-food pest.

What to do at your property

Photograph the insect and affected leaves, record the plant name and inspect new pots before bringing them inside. Ask whether the concern is a building-entry problem or a landscape-health issue. Treatment, if warranted, should target the correct life stage and be labeled for the plant and site.
