The most common indoor roach in Missouri. They’re light brown with two dark stripes behind the head and grow about ½ inch long.

  • Evidence includes tiny droppings, egg capsules, and live sightings at night 

American Cockroaches

Larger (up to 2 inches), reddish-brown roaches with a yellowish band behind the head. 

  • Often found in basements, sewer lines, drains, and commercial buildings 
  • May enter through plumbing or foundation cracks 
  • Look for droppings and a strong oily smell in dark, damp areas 
Oriental Cockroach

Oriental Cockroaches

Also known as “water bugs,” these are dark, shiny black roaches about 1 inch long.

  • Prefer cool, damp areas like crawlspaces and floor drains 
  • Often found outdoors in leaf litter or under porches 
  • Indicate problems with moisture or drainage

Brown-Banded Cockroaches

Smaller (about ½ inch), light brown roaches with lighter bands across their wings. 

  • Prefer warm, dry areas like behind wall hangings or inside electronics 
  • Less likely to be found in kitchens, more common in living rooms or offices 
  • Droppings and egg cases may appear in high places or light fixtures 
Smokybrown Cockroach

Smokybrown Cockroaches

Shiny, dark mahogany roaches, slightly smaller than American roaches.

  • Found in attics, garages, and outdoor areas near wood piles or gutters 
  • Often fly toward lights at night 
  • Signs include egg cases, wings, and occasional indoor sightings in warmer months 
Pennsylvania Wood Roach

Pennsylvania Wood Roaches 

Light to dark brown roaches with a flattened, oval body and tan margins on their wings. Males can fly, while females are wingless or have short wings. 

  • Commonly found outdoors in woodpiles, mulch, and under tree bark 
  • May wander indoors accidentally, especially when firewood is brought inside 
  • Do not typically establish indoor infestations, but their presence can be alarming 
  • Look for them in basements, garages, or near fireplaces during warmer months
