White-Footed Mouse Identification and Property Tips

White-footed mice are native rodents associated with wooded places. They can resemble deer mice closely, so white feet alone are not enough for a dependable identification.

Identification and habits

Missouri has several similar Peromyscus mice. Tail proportions and markings help an experienced observer separate them. Note whether sightings are outdoors, in an outbuilding or inside occupied rooms; that information helps define the inspection rather than prove a species.

What to do at your property

Store feed and seed securely and photograph gaps around doors and utility penetrations. Ask for help when fresh droppings or repeated indoor sightings continue. Avoid touching wild mice and do not dry sweep or vacuum their waste; follow current CDC rodent-cleanup guidance. Inspection, trapping and entry repairs should fit the evidence found.
