Pillbug and Sowbug Identification and Property Tips

Pillbugs and sowbugs are small land-dwelling crustaceans commonly found under damp debris. Indoor sightings often point to an entry opening or nearby moisture rather than a need for broad indoor treatment.

Identification and habits

Their oval bodies have visible armored segments. Pillbugs can roll into a ball, while sowbugs generally cannot. They are associated with moist organic material outdoors and are not wood-destroying insects.

What to do at your property

Move damp cardboard and decaying debris away from building edges, check drainage and repair accessible gaps. Note repeated sightings near basement doors, plumbing or stored boxes. Ask for an inspection if moisture or frequent entry persists; correcting the source is an important part of prevention.
