Homeowners looking for natural pest control often want to reduce pesticide use around their property. A useful starting point is identifying the pest and addressing the food, water and access that support it.

Start with Prevention and Monitoring

Integrated pest management combines monitoring, prevention and suitable control methods. Finding an insect does not always mean treatment is needed. Identify it first and consider the location and extent of activity.

  • Store food in closed containers and clean up food scraps.
  • Repair leaks and address persistent moisture.
  • Maintain screens and seal suitable gaps around doors and utility entries.
  • Monitor activity so you can assess whether your actions are helping.

Natural Does Not Mean Risk-Free

Plant-derived or organic pesticides can still pose risks. The product, exposure and way it is used matter. Do not assume an essential-oil mixture is suitable for indoor use or around children and pets. The National Pesticide Information Center can help explain pesticide risks and product questions.

Follow the Specific Product Instructions

If a pesticide is needed, use a product labeled for the pest and location and follow all directions. Keep children and pets away from treated areas for the period specified on the label. Protect pet food and water dishes from application and storage areas. Read EPA's guidance on protecting pets.

Discuss Options for Your Property

Tell Plank what you have seen and any household concerns before service. Ask about preparation, selected methods and follow-up. Treatment choices depend on the pest and property; a blanket promise of a non-toxic or permanently pest-free home would be misleading.
