Flying Ants Indoors: Identification and Next Steps

Winged insects around a window can be unsettling. Flying ants are reproductive ants, but a sighting alone does not identify the species or prove that a colony is inside your home. Save a clear photo or specimen before deciding on treatment.
Flying ant or termite?
Ants have a narrow waist, bent antennae and front wings longer than their rear wings. Termite swarmers have a broader waist, straighter antennae and four wings of similar length. Small or damaged specimens can be difficult to identify, so ask for help if you are uncertain.
Why carpenter ants deserve attention
Carpenter ants excavate wood for nests; they do not eat it. Moisture-damaged wood can provide a nesting site. That makes the original article’s suggestion that flying ants do not damage wood too broad: the species and nesting location matter.
What to record before an inspection
- Note the room, date and approximate number of insects.
- Photograph repeated activity around windows, trim or damp wood.
- Report leaks, damaged wood and any sawdust-like material without opening walls yourself.
- Avoid applying several products before identification; tell the technician about anything already used.
