Field Ant Identification and Property Tips

Field ants are outdoor ants in the genus Formica. Their soil nests and mounds can become a concern in lawns or other frequently used areas.

Identification and habits

Appearance varies by species, so size and color alone do not distinguish them from every other ant. Mounds are part of the nest, and an outdoor mound does not establish an indoor infestation.

What to do at your property

Photograph the ants and mound and note whether activity affects a walkway, lawn or building. Avoid disturbing an unidentified nest. Discuss whether the location warrants management and what approach fits the identified ant.
