Flies and wasps need different assessments

When flying insects are a concern around Rolla & St. James, identify the insect and the source before choosing a response. A fly at a window, flies around waste and activity at a suspected wasp nest are different situations.

Record what you can from a distance

  • Where the insects gather and when activity occurs.
  • Whether there is repeated movement into one opening.
  • Nearby food, waste or persistent moisture.
  • Any previous treatment and whether activity changed.

Leave suspected nests undisturbed

Avoid mowing or working close to a suspected nest. Do not seal an active-looking entrance or climb to reach it. Ask about identification, access and stinging-pest service. Nest treatment and removal are not automatically the same service.

Look for a fly source

Check accessible waste and food-storage areas and note drainage concerns. Some flies shelter in buildings; others are associated with a breeding source that needs attention. Ask about fly control and report recurring activity instead of assuming every fly has the same cause.
