Cockroach Types: Identification Clues and Service Planning
| Jun 27, 2024
Illustrative commercial kitchen, showing a food-handling setting where cockroach concerns require identification and service planning.
Cockroach identification helps determine where to inspect and how to plan service. Body markings, size and the location of activity are useful clues, but immature insects can look different from adults.
Four types to recognize
- German cockroach: adults are small and tan with two dark lengthwise marks behind the head. Kitchens and bathrooms are common inspection areas.
- American cockroach: a larger reddish-brown cockroach associated with warm, moist locations.
- Oriental cockroach: dark brown to nearly black, often associated with damp lower areas of buildings.
- Brown-banded cockroach: has lighter cross-bands and may occupy higher, warmer hiding areas in furniture or around appliances.
Capture useful information
Photograph the insect from above with a size reference. Note where and when it appeared, whether sightings repeat and whether other evidence is present. Do not open electrical equipment or move heavy appliances unsafely.
Match service to the findings
Ask the technician which features support the identification and what areas need attention. Report leaks, food-storage issues and previous product use. Monitoring can help locate activity and assess the response to selected treatment.
Plank can explain preparation, treatment scope and follow-up for your property. See our cockroach identification information and bring any uncertain sample or photograph to the service discussion.
