Identify the Insect Before Choosing a Response

Buzzing around a deck in Lebanon can involve several different insects. The location, nest type and insect identification matter more than the sound alone. Photograph activity from a distance if practical, and note which openings insects use.

Carpenter bees tunnel in wood. Hovering males cannot sting; females can sting if handled. Painting suitable exposed wood can discourage nesting. See MU Extension’s carpenter bee guidance.

Wasps have different nesting habits, and some defend their nests when disturbed. Avoid handling nests or blocking an active entrance. Keep children and pets away from the area while you arrange identification and advice.

Discuss the Nest and the Work Needed

Keep the Deck Maintained

• Inspect accessible wood and eaves from the ground; note fresh activity or damage.
• Keep outdoor food, drinks and trash covered.
• Discuss when existing insect openings can be repaired after the activity is addressed.
• Have a qualified contractor assess weakened rails or other structural concerns.
