Brown Recluse Spider Identification and Property Tips

Brown recluse spiders occur in Missouri. Identification should be based on the spider, not a skin mark or color alone.

Identification and habits

The violin-like marking can be a clue, but it is not sufficient by itself. Recluses have six eyes in three pairs and generally unpatterned legs and abdomen. These small features are best assessed by someone experienced in identification.

What to do at your property

Avoid handling an unidentified spider or reaching blindly into stored items. Photograph it from a safe distance and note repeated sightings. Seek medical attention for a suspected recluse bite or concerning reaction; a pest inspection cannot diagnose a wound.
