Blacklegged Tick Identification and Property Tips

The blacklegged tick is also known as the deer tick. Tick identification is useful, but a photo cannot tell whether a tick carries an infection.

Identification and habits

This species occurs across much of the eastern United States. Size and appearance change with life stage and feeding. Adult activity can continue during above-freezing winter weather, so a calendar date does not rule out exposure.
