Ant Prevention at Home: Food, Moisture and Entry Checks

Ant prevention works best as a routine: reduce food and moisture, check entry points and keep track of recurring activity. These steps can support treatment without promising that a building will remain ant-free forever.
Start in food and water areas
- Clean spills and crumbs, including beneath movable small appliances.
- Store food and pet food securely.
- Keep waste containers clean and closed.
- Report leaks and recurring dampness around sinks or appliances.
Check the route indoors
Observe where trails enter before wiping them away. Photograph the location and check accessible gaps around doors, windows and utility openings. Arrange appropriate repairs without sealing required ventilation. Keep vegetation from resting against the building where practical.
Coordinate prevention with treatment
Tell the technician about sprays, baits or household remedies already used. Ask what cleaning is appropriate around any placed bait and how to report continued activity. Changing products repeatedly can make the service history harder to assess.
Know when to request an inspection
Recurring ants, activity around damaged wood or a problem that returns despite routine cleanup deserves identification. The species and nesting conditions influence the recommendation. A common nickname such as “sugar ant” may not identify the actual species.
Plank can discuss ant control, preparation and follow-up for your property. Ask which work is included in the estimate and what conditions you can address between visits.
