Ant Control: Identification, Colony Activity and Service

A line of ants across the counter is a clue to investigate. Effective ant service begins with identifying the species and understanding where workers are traveling, what attracts them and whether a nest may be inside or outside.
Ants are not all alike
Ant nesting sites and food preferences vary. Carpenter ants can excavate wood for nests, while other species may use soil, cracks or sheltered spaces. The visible workers are only part of the colony, so removing a trail does not necessarily resolve the source.
Make the inspection more useful
- Photograph ants close up and include an object for scale.
- Note trail locations, times of activity and nearby food or moisture.
- Report leaks, damaged wood and recurring activity in the same room.
- List any sprays, baits or household remedies already applied.
Prevention and selected treatment
Clean spills, store food securely and address accessible entry gaps and moisture problems. A treatment recommendation should match the identified ant and the site. Ask how to avoid interfering with any bait placement and what changes to watch for afterward.
Do not combine products or apply insecticide to food-preparation surfaces unless the label permits that use. Discuss follow-up if activity continues rather than repeatedly changing products on your own.
